Electricity licensing in Australia is regulated by individual states. The Department of Commerce in Western Australia tracks the licensee and allows the public to search for a designated/licensed electrician in person.
Apprenticeship in Victoria currently lasts four years, during those three years the apprentice attends trade school in block releases of one week each month or one day each week. At the end of the apprenticeship, the trainee has to pass three examinations, one of which is theory based while the other two are practical.

 Upon successful completion of these examinations, satisfying all other components of the apprenticeship, the apprentice is granted an A Class license on the application of Energy Safe Victoria (ESV).
An A Class electrician may work without supervision but is unable to work for profit or for profit without the qualifications required to become a Registered Electrical Contractor (REC) or to be in the employment of a person holding REC status. However, some exemptions exist.
In most cases a certificate of electrical safety must be submitted to the relevant body after the performance of any electrical work.
Protective equipment (including insulating rubber gloves and mats) used and worn by electricians in Australia needs to be tested regularly to ensure it is still protecting the worker. Due to the high risk involved in this trade, this test needs to be done regularly and the rules vary by state.

Electrician's training follows an apprenticeship model, which takes four or five years to progress to a fully qualified travelman level. Typical apprenticeship programs include 80-90% practical assignments and 10-20% classroom training under passenger supervision. The training and licensing of electricians is regulated by each province, although professional licenses are valid under internal trade agreements throughout Canada. An endorsement under the Red Seal Program provides additional competency assurance to industry standards. For individuals to become a licensed electrician, they need to do 6000 hours of practical on the job training. They are also required to attend school for 4 years and pass a provincial exam. This training enables him to become a Travelman Electrician. This credential gives the ability to become a licensed electrical contractor and obtain permits. There are different levels of field security representatives A, B and C. The only difference between each class is that they are able to handle increasingly higher voltages and currents.
Restricted electrical licenses are also issued for specializations such as motor winder, appliance repair, audio/visual installation and HVAC installation.

Qualification standards in the UK are defined by the Sector Skills Council Summit Skills. The qualifications certified by award-winning organizations such as City & Guilds and EAL are based on these national professional standards. An electrician can register for the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) card with the JIB (Joint Industries Board) once he/she has qualified and demonstrated the required level of competency. Electrical ability at Level 3 is required to practice as an electrician in the UK. It is known as AM2.
Electricians can demonstrate further competence by studying further competency in the design and verification of electrical installations or in testing and inspection of electrical installations. These qualifications may be listed on the back of the JIB card.
